Lost the Weight, Left with Loose Skin? Here’s What Actually Helps

Losing a significant amount of weight is something to be proud of — and for a lot of my patients, it comes with a frustrating catch: loose, sagging skin that doesn’t bounce back. I see this constantly now, especially with how many people are losing weight on GLP-1 medications like tirzepatide and semaglutide. The good news is there’s a lot we can do without surgery. Here’s what actually helps.

Why skin loosens after weight loss

Your skin stretches to cover you as you gain weight, and its ability to snap back depends on collagen and elastin — two proteins that decline with age, sun exposure, and genetics. When weight comes off, especially quickly, the skin doesn’t always have the elasticity left to retract. That’s not a willpower problem or something you did wrong. It’s biology, and biology is something we can work with.

Morpheus8 for deeper laxity

Morpheus8 is my workhorse for moderate skin laxity. It combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy that reaches deep into the skin to remodel it — stimulating collagen and tightening from within. It works on the face and jawline as well as the body: arms, abdomen, and thighs, which are the areas that tend to bother people most after weight loss. It’s one of our most-requested treatments for exactly this reason.

SkinPen for mild laxity and texture

For milder looseness and crepey texture — think neck, décolleté, and finer skin — SkinPen microneedling triggers your body’s own collagen and elastin production through controlled micro-injuries. We often pair it with PRP, using your own platelets to amplify the healing response. It’s a gentler tool than Morpheus8 and a great fit when the laxity is early.

Sculptra to rebuild lost structure

Weight loss doesn’t just loosen skin — it can deflate it, leaving the face looking hollow or tired. Sculptra is an injectable that works gradually, prompting your body to rebuild its own collagen over a series of sessions. Instead of filling a line, it restores the underlying structure and firmness that fat loss took away. The change is subtle and builds over months, which is exactly why it looks natural.

Skincare and habits that support it

Treatments work better when your skin and body are set up to respond. Resistance training builds muscle that helps fill loose areas. Medical-grade skincare — retinoids, peptides, vitamin C — supports real collagen renewal in a way drugstore creams can’t. And the basics still matter: enough protein, healthy fats, and steady hydration give your skin the raw materials to rebuild.

Building your plan

Nobody’s loose skin is identical, and the right answer is usually a combination rather than a single treatment. At your consult I assess where you are, how much laxity we’re dealing with, and what you want to change, then build a plan around it. We’d confirm you’re a good candidate for each piece before we start.

If you’ve put in the work to lose the weight, your skin shouldn’t be the thing holding back how you feel about the result. Book a consultation and we’ll map out your options.
